On August 12, 2026, a solar eclipse occurred over the Atlantic ocean and Spain. I was able to observe the eclipse in Port d'Andratx, Mallorca, under optimal conditions.
Here are the coordinates of my observation point: 39.534054° N 2.366267° E = 39° 32' 02.6" N 2° 21' 58.6" E

The times in CEST (UTC + 2h) for this location, calculated with EclipseDroid:

    hh:mm:ss.s  Elev Azim  PW
K1: 19:38:09,7   13° 279° 298°
K2: 20:31:14,6  2,7° 287° 120°
M.: 20:32:02,9  2,5° 287°  27°
K3: 20:32:51,0  2,4° 287° 294°
K4:(21:22:45,1 -6,6° 295°)

The fourth contact was unobservable, as sunset occurred at 8:50 PM.
During the partial phase, several sunspot groups adorned the solar surface.

For photography, I used the Canon RF 200-800mm f/9 telephoto lens on a Canon R6 and EclipseDroid.
The camera was oriented with north at the top, but the images on this page have been rotated so they are horizontal to the horizon (zenith at the top).
For the central minute of totality, I set the lens to a focal length of 400 mm; otherwise, it was set to 800 mm.

partial with birdAlongside the R6, a Canon 650D with the Canon EF 100mm Macro lens was also running to capture the outer corona.

Due to the low angle of the sun, the images are naturally affected by atmospheric refraction and artifacts from atmospheric turbulence.

SunsetSonnenuntergangThe sunset of the thin crescent a few minutes after totality was very impressive.
The green flash was visible at the last disappearance of the crescent:

Shadow bands

I also set up an experiment to record shadow bands. Unfortunately, no shadow bands were visible or captured on film, neither before nor after totality.

The lunar shadow and the landscape

The progression of the lunar shadow was very impressive. Captured with a Canon 650D and EF-S 10-18mm lens, controlled via bracketing (0, -1, -2 EV) and interval timer using  Magic Lantern.

ReihenaufnahmeThis is a series of shots, a composite of a single image taken with a Canon 450D 40mm zoom lens (0.5s, f/4.5, ISO 800), combined with partial phases from the R6 images taken at 800mm.

Weather

I measured Temperature, relative humidity, wind and illumination with my C-Control device.
Clicking on the graphs displays a larger view. Download my data in CSV file format.

Weather eclipseThe course of temperature, humidity, and illuminance (ambient brightness) around the time of the eclipse was recorded.
Temperature was digitally measured and logged 10 cm above ground and at a height of 1 m above ground using a DS1621 sensor. Humidity (HIH4031 humidity-to-voltage converter) and wind speed (cup anemometer) were also recorded.

Near ground level, the temperature rose to over 50 °C during the day. Towards sunset, the temperature approached that at a height of 1 m. The
temperature fluctuation there was significantly smaller.
As expected, relative humidity changed inversely to the temperature, since a specific effect of the eclipse on the water content of the air is not anticipated. Relative humidity dropped to around 40-50% at the temperature maximum in the afternoon and rose again to between 70 and 80% as the temperature fell.

The wind was very light on the day of the eclipse with negligible gusts. After the first contact with the eclipse, the wind picked up slightly. Whether this was due to the eclipse cannot be determined with certainty. In the adjacent graph, a constant value of 25 m/s was added to the wind speeds.

The contact times are marked by vertical lines.

weather totalityDetail of the temperature profiles during the central phase of the eclipse.
The minimum illuminance at the midpoint of totality was 1.2 lux, which is significantly less than during the 2016 eclipse in Indonesia (5 lux) or the 2027 eclipse in the USA (6 lux).

comparison Comparison with the following day: the temperature during the eclipse is about 2°C lower than that of the following day, with roughly the same values at the beginning of the eclipse.

SarosportrraitWith the App Eclipse 2026, EclipseDroid for Android or AstroWin  for Windows, you can calculate precise eclipse data for any location. Here's an example of the output from  EclipseDroid,  from the "Eclipse Experts" window:

EclipseDroid is also very well suited for carrying out sophisticated photo and observation campaigns, as in my project, the main results of which I have presented on this page. On the right is the Saros portrait of this eclipse. It belongs to Saros cycle 126 and is the second-to-last central and total eclipse of this cycle, whose central eclipses began as annular eclipses. I was able to observe the Saros predecessor in 2008 in the norther polar sea.
